We figured out where Dr. Ethan Duncan got his symbols from for his secret genetic sequence code: alchemy.

Here are the alchemical symbols that he used, with their traditional meanings. You can see them in the copy of The Island of Dr. Moreau that he gave Kira, and in Rachel’s watercolors.

Alchemical Symbols with Meanings

These are the diagrams and figures used to calculate the flight of the pencil from the fire extinguisher in Season 2 Episode 10 of Orphan Black, and covered in Episode 3 of the podcast. It turns out that you can use the Projectile Motion Simulator and skip all this, but then you’d miss the amusing force diagrams.

Episode 3 Diagram 1

Numbers for Calculations:

Pencil: 7″ = about 17 cm, weight = 8 grams = 128 grains, diameter = 1 cm, height = 1 cm.

Eye: 2.4 cm height, 2.1 cm length, 78% water (for density)

Brain: 14cm width, 16.7 cm length, 9.3 cm height

Fire Extinguisher: 195 PSI = 1344 kPa

Rachel Duncan = 5’7″ (with heels), distance from top of head to center of eyeball approximately 5″.

Distance between fire extinguisher to Rachel approximately 7 feet.

Angle of fire from fire extinguisher to Rachel’s eye: 14.5 degrees.
